Hülsta 1946-2024 RIP
Hülsta was founded shortly after the end of the last war by Karl Hüls in Stadtlohn, Gernamy (Hülsta=Huls + sta). The company grew quickly to become a powerhouse in the German furniture industry, acquiring several other companies including Rolf Benz. Karl Hüls was a big man in every way, 6'4'' tall and with real presence. But he was also charming; I remember attending an enjoyable reception in his home many years ago. However after his death, in spite of having four sons (all of similar stature to their father), the company declined and by 2009 there was no longer any family involvement. Hülsta's insolvency in 2024 still comes as a big shock to the industry.
